FPÖ Federal President candidate Norbert Hofer started his official election campaign on Saturday in the Upper Styrian workers’ stronghold of Kapfenberg. In terms of content, they remained true to themselves and railed against the “asylum chaos”, which is why the speeches by Hofer, Heinz-Christian Strache and Mario Kunasek were almost identical to those that were heard in Graz just under a month ago.

Several hundred people came to the Kolloman-Wallisch-Platz in Kapfenberg in a cool wind to listen to Hofer, but above all to listen to their “HC”. Traditionally, the John Otti Band set the mood an hour before the speeches – with “Fürstenfeld” from STS and similar folk festival hits. The Styrian state party leader Kunasek welcomed the liberal guests from other federal states: Vienna’s vice mayor Johann Gudenus, Salzburg state party leader Andreas Schöppl, Carinthia’s state party chairman Christian Ragger and Adalbert Cramer, second state parliament president from Upper Austria.

“Blue miracles” in Styria

Kunasek spoke of the “blue miracles” that the Styrians had already achieved: For example, Kapfenberg, as a workers’ stronghold, was “almost turned blue” in the 2015 municipal council elections. In fact, the Freedom Party gained a good ten percentage points and, with 25 percent of the vote, clearly left the ÖVP behind. With more than 48 percent of the vote, the SPÖ still holds first place in the industrial city on the Mürz.

After Kunasek, Hofer brought his messages to the people: He demanded, for example, that the “invasion of Muslims” be stopped and that pensions not be cut. Never before have there been so many unemployed people, so high taxes and so many foreigners in Austria. He wants to generate more budget, for example for care allowance, through a better organized health system, and savings could be made in neighboring hospitals in two federal states if this were federal matters.

Strache stepped onto the stage as the highlight: He praised Hofer for his positive thinking and his zest for life. Although he is in pain, he is running because “Austria is so close to his heart”. Then the federal party leader shot himself back on the subject of refugees, asylum and foreigners, drew links to the attacks in Paris and Brussels and spoke not of a “holy war”, but a “devil’s war”. There should only be one upper limit for refugees: “zero”. Thanks to Macedonia, there has been some calm in the past few weeks, but this is deceptive. Hungary shows how it works: “Thanks be to Orban,” said Strache and added: “That is how I would do it as the future Chancellor, but Federal President Hofer will come first.”

Tips against competitors

Both Hofer and Strache drew their political competitors for the office of Federal President through the cocoa – as they did at their rally on Graz’s main square in early March. Above all, she targeted Alexander Van der Bellen. Austria wants to abolish this. It is important to “bring a breath of fresh air into the country,” said Strache. That is only possible with Hofer. But if the SPÖ and ÖVP and their candidates do not make it into the runoff election, that equates to a political earthquake.

At the end the Austrian national anthem was played, with the sun shining through the clouds in Kapfenberg for the first time on that day. Hofer and Strache waved flags together with the audience. Then they went to the people, shook hands and took photos with their fans.
